When I first met Purdie before starting my one-to-one programme, Through the Trees, she was working as a graphic designer for high end clients in London, including Fifa. When she talked about her dreams as an artist, they felt far away and in the distant future.
At the end of our journey together, in just four months, Purdie was no longer working in her graphic design job. She had left, and as an artist…
🏹Her artwork was available to buy online.
🏹She was enjoying working on her first commission,
🏹She’d unboxed her first very large canvas.
🏹She was telling the world about her work and ideas as an artist on Instagram.
What’s more this month, Purdie’s artwork is featured in an exhibition for the first time at an art gallery in London, she has also just launched her own website.
Purdie did all these things, not me as her coach on a journey Through the Trees. What the journey did give Purdie is a roadmap and a set of reputation building tools, which once in her pocket, gave her the confidence and self-belief to take action towards her dreams.
🏹Hi Purdie, why did you decide to go on a journey Through the Trees?
My challenge was how do I define my purpose as an artist and how do I explain that to people – to my audience. Also, who is my audience. I believe that having a solid foundation as to why I am an artist and why I create is the key to having confidence in saying who I am. It’s not just about the making, there needs to be a balance.
🏹How did the journey help you overcome these challenges?
Over a series of weeks, Nicola slowly asked the most valuable questions that allowed me to really think emotionally and mentally about why I am an artist. I knew there had to be a deeper meaning to my work than just, ‘because I like doing it’. This gives me confidence in telling stories not just with images, but with stories/words that weave into my marketing.
🏹Which part of the Through the Trees journey did you find most enjoyable?
The online chats with Nicola. Feeling like it was okay to let go and let out ideas I have and having her help me find clarity. I struggle to explain things sometimes, but Nicola’s patience really helped me get these ideas out of my head.
🏹Which part of the Through the Trees journey did you find most useful?
The questions that Nicola asked on the journey and feeling like I could trust the process even when a bit unsure of myself. Then being presented with my Brand Warrior Toolkit – this was the moment when I realised how far I had come! With development by Nicola, I realised I had a strong concept from which to build my work and marketing together.
🏹Would you recommend Through the Trees to a friend Purdie?
Yes absolutely! It was all very useful, helpful and supportive.
